FEAR - FRIEND OR FOE?
Fear is often seen as a negative emotion, however, the positive aspects of fear can be one of the biggest motivators and driving forces in life. When we confront, accept and embrace fear it allows personal growth and change.
Marianne Williamson sums up the energy of fear nicely.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?”
FEAR:
- Dominates and paralyises us – fear of failure keeps us stuck
- Prevents us from trusting and achieving our goals
- Creates setbacks, it stops us from acting on things
- Creates worry, stress and anxiety which can lead to depression
- Creates vulnerability and separation
- Creates a sense someone has power over us
- Drains our energy
- Makes us feel not good enough, smart enough, or successful enough
- Blocks us from empowerment
Fear keeps us safe and small and often a lot of our fears are imagined and not even real. Find the positives of fear and don’t aim to go around it or avoid it.
FEAR CAN:
- Help us search for truth
- Help us to accept that we are heading down a new path
- Help us step out of our comfort zone
- Allow us to see something from a different point of view
- Be a sign that you are ready to start a change that has been waiting for you
TECHNIQUES TO HELP YOU RISE ABOVE FEAR :
Recognise the fear: Pay attention to your thoughts, words and actions throughout the day. Whilst some fears may be easy to identify others may be harder to spot. Become the silent witness during the day. Observe yourself, observe your thoughts. Notice the types of thoughts you have on a consistent basis. Take time to identify your fears, then actively work towards dispelling them.
- What am I afraid of?
- What is the driving force behind my fear?
- What is the root cause?
- What triggers my fears?
- Are my fears reasonable or unreasonable?
- Are there any patterns in my fear?
- What are the beliefs that are fuelling the fears?
Embrace the fear: Every emotion is a feeling and response to life, we are meant to feel them. When we accept our fears they have less of an effect over us.
A great process to do is: make a list on a piece of paper “Things I can control” and “ Things I can control” , now list all the things you can control and things you can’t control. Focus on what you can control and leave behind everything else.
Feel your way through it: Recognise where the fear is expressing itself in the body, take your awareness to this area and use your breath to breathe though the discomfort. Use a mantra/ affirmation during this process such as
“ I choose to see peace instead of this”. This will help calm and ease the mind.
Get your mind right: Choose not to overthink things, the more relaxed your mind is the less fear will raise its ugly head. Try mindfulness, meditation, the Emotional Freedom Technique, or Serenity Vibrational Healing technique to help quieten the mind to work through clearing old beliefs, traumas and negative thought patterns.
Learn to let go of the past: It’s valuable to accept all that has happened in your past, every experience has been essential to your spiritual journey. Accepting the past allows you to be present here and now in this moment. When we live in the past we become stuck in repetitive behaviours and thoughts that no longer serve us.
Take baby steps to achieve your goals: Often we can become so overwhelmed and fearful we avoid taking any steps to our goals. The simplest way to overcome our fears is by taking one small step or action. Doing so on a regular basis primes our minds to do it in various situations.
